The Simple Things

The Simple Things // 76sunflowers

I often think I try too hard as a parent.
Always needing to please.
Always thinking about how I can go that extra mile to make an amazing day.
Trying to make the best moments to establish those childhood memories.
But sometimes it's just the simple things that they love.
A scoot round the block and an hour at the little park down the lane.

Walking through the leaves, making our own trees, perfecting our fine motor skills by threading leaves with care and hoping that the big green space doesn't get covered by hundreds of houses jam packed in as tightly as can be.
Not a penny was spent but they loved it.
Quality time with me.

What are your simple things?

  1. Have to say I remember the simple things from my childhood and my two enjoy that too! Though Bex does love a shopping trip into Bath of course! Great example of this weekend, Oscar had a private clay pigeon lesson costing quite a bit but he was disappointed at the end of the weekend because we had not made it up to the fields he likes, with the dogs! That was what stood out for him. So yes all that free stuff is always worth consuming with a few extra's thrown in! x

  2. this is so so true. caleb is at his happiest at the local park which is 2 minutes away from us, i sometimes feel like its a cop out if we go there too many times in a week but then i see his face beaming and think i'm crazy and should go more often, and like you said, doesn't cost a dime. Happy child, happy mummy ;)

I love if we find a worm, a snail and he gets so excited. He tries his best to go through every muddy puddle, swish through the leaves. Everything about nature I guess :)

Yes, I couldn't agree more. We had a really wonderful family holiday this year - a week in a cottage in Brittany in October - we didn't plan anything, we didn't have any special places to visit, we just pootled about without any rush, made and ate lovely food, went for walks collecting French acorns and played on beaches in the rain (while husband surfed...). It was heavenly for us to focus on the simple things too instead of having a list of things we were supposed to do on holiday - really relaxing and precious.

  9. Kids really are so easily pleased. I have to remind myself not to make her walk quickly but to let her just enjoy looking at the little things, doing the simple things.
