Soul Circus Yoga & Wellness Festival 2017 {Preview}

The Easter holidays are upon us and the Spring sunshine is filling the sky, and our hearts, with some much needed warmth. It's that time of year, with the clocks already having moved on, that I start to look ahead to the long sun filled days of Summer and begin to make some plans. My Summer always has to include a tent and a festival and this year I am so happy to be going back again to cover the amazing yoga and wellness festival that is Soul Circus.

Tucked away in the quiet area of Elmore, Gloucestershire, and within easy reach of the M5, Soul Circus is an ideal festival for the yoga lover whether you are on the start of your yoga path or way down that road; with a wealth of classes to suit a variety of styles there will always be a class for every yogi to participate in.
Many faces are returning from last year including Aimee Garcia-Marshall, who had me smiling all the way through her Vinyasa Flow class, Taylor Harkness, the first teacher to inspire me to attempt a handstand, and Emily Young (RYT 500 & senior lecturer in Children's Health and Wellbeing) to whom I owe a big thanks for really igniting the spark in me to train as a children's yoga teacher following a wonderful conversation with her last year, as well as assisting me in my handstand in Taylor's class!

Soul Circus will also have the whole family in mind again in 2017 with Mary Grinstead installed as the resident yoga instructor for the under 18s. As a fellow school teacher, and children's yoga teacher, I'm really looking forward to seeing Mary working with the younger yogis at Soul Circus.

As well as having opportunities to challenge yourself with your asana practise, Soul Circus also places high value on it's musical entertainment. Music will fill the air of Soul Circus 2017 with live entertainment on the main stage and acoustic offerings tucked away in pockets around the site.

Food and Drink looks to be a winner again; 'Whatever your diet, whether you desire gluten free, dairy free, cold pressed or grass fed we've got it covered!' Local produce is a key point again this year as well as the festival having it's own manifesto on sustainability including pledges to increase recycling and lower food waste, introducing composting loos for 2017 and sourcing food locally within 60 miles of the site.

For a bit of indulgence and pampering the VIP experience will give you access to a champagne bar, VIP champagne lounge, all day coffee and tea bar plus more!
You can also add a spot of extra comfort to your camping experience with a range of luxury glamping options plus, new this year, pre-erected tents. You can of course bring your own tent or camper van!

Wherever you stay for the two nights of Soul Circus 2017 you are bound to have a dreamy, chilled out sleeping experience.

Going it alone to a festival {Soul Circus 2016 ~ Preview}

Whilst still on a high from attending Camp Bestival last weekend, with thousands of other family festival goers, I now look ahead to a calmer experience at Soul Circus. Challenging myself this year, and setting a few goals before I hit the magical age of 40, I'll be stepping outside of my comfort zone by attending Soul Circus alone. With the main focus of the festival being Yoga and Wellness I have a good feeling that the other 500 festival goers will be of a like-minded nature and I don't think I'll feel alone for long. That's not to say I'm not a little bit nervous though. To ease my concerns I have stream lined my usual festival packing list to make setting up camp more manageable and I have perfected the solo erecting of my tent - as long as the wind is calm! I plan to pack light; yoga leggings, crop tops and baggy vests to see me through plenty of classes and workshops and comfortable cosy yoga pants for some evening relaxation. I'll also be adding these, easy to pack, unbelievably soft organic bamboo eco, leggings and vest from Boody to my case. They are great to pair up with brighter clothing or layer for warmth.

Soul Circus have just released their Yoga Class Timetable and Wellness Workshop Schedule with plenty happening each day to keep me busy. In contrast to Camp Bestival, where we struck a good balance between family fun and adult me time, at Soul Circus it is just me to think about. Going solo to a festival does have some advantages that I can see straight away; I can get up when I'm ready to, prepare my own morning cuppa and porridge without the worry of having to escort any children to the toilets, set my own agenda for the day and change plans without upsetting anyone else, eat lunch and dinner when my stomach is hungry but most importantly I can do yoga whenever I like!

Camp Bestival 2016 ~ A jam-packed guide!

The excitement is rising in the house of 76sunflowers as we count down the weeks to our annual trip to the best family festival on earth - Camp Bestival.
My children have grown up with Camp Bestival in their blood, having attended since 2010, and it is their summer highlight every year. I remember that first festival nervously taking a two and four year old not really knowing what to expect but if I had this toddler survival guide I would have been much calmer!

One thing we did get right in 2010 was the fancy dress and I had my little pirate and fairy happily bum shuffling and toddling around that year. Now, fancy dress at Camp Bestival is a huge thing, not essential - my boy has no desire to dress up anymore - but you will see it everywhere. Should you be short of ideas for this year's Space theme then the Fancy Dress Festival Guru herself, aka Tattooed Mummy, has a great post here for inspiration - I'm hoping she goes as one of the Clangers!

Over the years we have perfected our packing and preparation, and tweaked our list to suit our family as they grow older, but this list from Penny would have saved us a lot of time and is a great starting point if going to your first festival.

Once the packing lists are done it is always a good idea to make some plans about what you all want to try and do across the long weekend. The site is packed full of entertainment for all ages and here is a selection of things that Sarah, from the Parenting Trials, is looking forward to this year including the biggest bouncy castle in the world!

Some first time festival goers may worry about the toilet situation but this post, will put you at ease, as well as giving you some other essential things to know or do.

Food is a hugely positive experience at Camp Bestival with an array of culinary delights to suit everybody's tastebuds. Louise and her Gorgeous Boys are licking their lips in anticipation of this delicious line up!

Despite the fantastic array of food on offer it is still useful to bring some food from home for breakfasts in the tent and picnics on site. Polly, from Enchanted Pixie, has some super ideas for feeding a family at a festival to help balance the budget and still enjoy a Mexican Burrito!

Yoga & Festivals {Slow Motion at Camp Bestival 2016}

Tonight I floated home from my yoga class pausing to stand and watch the beautiful sunset. Every week I have witnessed a lush Yoga Sky and I always take a moment to take it all in.

I recently progressed from front room Yoga to proper classes, having said it would be something I would investigate following a gorgeous yoga session at last year's Camp Bestival, and it has been one of the best things I have done. Every week I have 90 minutes of pure chilled out indulgence for me where I can focus on my yoga practice and channel my thoughts to positivity and some spiritual relaxation. Already I feel more appreciative of the world, particularly apt in this current climate of political upset and human anger, and a bit more connected to it.

Yoga, and all that it stands for, goes hand in hand with festivals and chilling and tonight I counted the days and realised that Camp Bestival 2016 is now just 5 weeks away. Putting a bigger smile on my face was the announcement today that Bestival's holistic zone, Slow Motion, will be debuting at Camp Bestival and bringing with it The Huffington Post UK Yoga Shala with a range of yoga; Pregnancy Yoga, Yoga for all the family, Hip-Hop Yoga and Yoga for stress. Sessions will run from 8a.m. to 7p.m. each day and I feel it will be an area I will be frequenting a few times across the three festival days!

Yoga is fabulous to participate in at a festival and gives any of you Mamas, or Papas, out there a perfect escape for a little bit of 'me time'. The yoga tent is a great retreat from the noise and crowds and gives you time to reconnect to yourself and, from personal experience, will return you to your family re-energised and calmer!

The Feast Collective {Camp Bestival 2016}

I am really excited to say that we are off to Camp Bestival again this year as official bloggers so if you need any questions answered about this amazing festival then send them my way!
Regular readers will know we have loved Camp Bestival since our first family visit back in 2010; our childrens' best summer memories always include this magical place.
In case you didn't know Camp Bestival is a yearly get together at Lulworth Castle, Dorset overseen by Rob da Bank bringing together families, camping, live music, adventures and food for everyone from 0-100+.
Year on year festivals have increasingly diversified to satisfy our taste buds. Long gone are the scattering of greasy burger vans and their place comes top notch food. Camp Bestival has always prided itself on the food it offers from the Feast Collective; a variety of food stalls and bars all conveniently found in one big tent.

This year these additions have caught my eye:
For me the Vietmanese street food of Pho Sho & American inspired ramen burgers with a Filipino twist from Pimp my Ramen - definitely a burger joint worth visiting!

For the coffee addicted husband Noble Espresso.
And for the children, 100% natural ice lollies from Polar Pops.

Growing up with Camp Bestival {Camp Bestival 2014}

This summer sees our fifth trip down to Lulworth to experience Camp Bestival.
The children love it, the adults love it.
Year on year the festival develops and grows and I just love to see the changes in my children too.
It has helped with their confidence, their independence, their life skills... - I am sure they could put the tent up without me this year.
But, importantly to me, it has provided everlasting memories.

dan le sac & Scroobius Pip are back! {Camp Bestival 2014}

Sunday has always been my favourite day at Camp Bestival.
The last day of what has always been a fantastic long weekend.
The day when we try and get all the planned things done.
But also a day to unwind and take it all in.
Sunday last year saw just me and the children unwinding in the Literary Tent listening to some Spoken Word from my all time favourite bearded poet Scroobius Pip.
A relaxing time before we refuelled with some food and cider before meeting up with friends.
The evening saw a very proud moment for me when the girl joined me at the barrier for dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip.

So seeing Messrs le sac and Pip back on the bill, for which sounds like their last tour in a very long time, possibly forever *sniffs*, at Camp Bestival this year makes me, and the girl, very happy indeed!

LEGO and more Discoveries & Oddities! {Camp Bestival 2014}

Well, this has certainly extended the smile on the boy's face as the LEGO Imagination Factory are heading down to Lulworth to make Camp Bestival even more perfect for us! This week some truly fantastic sounding Oddities & Discoveries were announced.

Oddities & Discovery

Igor Rasputin’s Caravan of Lost Souls

An incredible ape-powered pop-up circus providing wondrous entertainment for your delectation and appreciation. Witness magic, contortion, hula hoop, mime, an amazing array of circus skills and more from this cabaret of curiosity, popping up in all four corners of Camp Bestival!

LEGO Imagination Factory

A celebration of ‘free build’, this magical environment will immerse you in the LEGO belief in the power of each individual’s imagination. Doubters might see a pile of bricks and accessories but ‘we’ see a jet fighter, a beautiful flower, an alien monster, our dog called Spike or the skyline of New York. The golden rule of The Imagination Factory is that there are no rules – no rights or wrongs – just inspiration to let LEGO enable you to build anything that your imagination can conjure up.

Oberon's Observatory

A ramshackle but beautiful edifice with a stargazer's viewing platform, there will be camp-bestiscopes for studying the curiosities happening across the festival and searching for the stars. Hidden in the heart of Oberon's Observatory is an old projection room where Camp Bestival will screen 21st century windows into other worlds, space and art. For the period of one lunation only, Camp Bestival invites you to come and explore this extraordinary building.

Showmany Calliope 

A mixture of traditional fairground showman heritage, pyrotechnics, a full independently powered 4K sound system and a bowtop caravan themed stage, that will play host to the devilish Mosschops and Sidewicket’s Britain’s Not Got Talent. So, do you want to perform on the craziest stage of all time? Have you got a talent? Have you not got talent? We don't care, because we haven't; so anything goes! From Dutch didgeridoo dancing to skateboarding budgerigars; panpipe duets to five-year-old Frank Carson impersonators (keep it clean please), we need you! Terms and Conditions do not apply.

Science Tent

Certainly not for boffins only and is definitely not to be missed! It’s a glorious mix of science-based performances like now>press>play and Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions, timetabled science including programming robots, 3D printing your favourite Minecraft designs, being amazed by a Rapsberry Pi and lots, lots more and drop in sessions where you can make video games with Play-doh, power an alarm clock with fruit, pre-programme a robot arm and so much more. There’s tons to stimulate and fascinate every age group! And that includes you mums and dads!

New arenas {Camp Bestival 2014}

Not satisfied with the array of activities, live music and visuals already on offer at the best family festival going, Camp Bestival are bringing in some new arenas for 2014!

Here's what the man at the top himself, Rob Da Bank, has to say...

“*drum roll* Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, the team at Camp Bestival HQ proudly present for your delectation and wonder, a host of beloved and brand new venues! Please welcome to our circus arena the Travelling Barn, The Pigs Big Ballroom, Caravanserai and Project Wild Thing!

Our new venues are causing the family and I a huge wardrobe dilemma: we'll want camouflage face paint and explorer gear for the feral activities in the Dingly Dell with Project Wild Thing, cowboy boots and chaps for the all-family toe-tapping hoe downs in the Travelling Barn, dancing shoes and circle skirts to swing along to Greg's Greats in the Pigs Big Ballroom and vaudevillian circus outfits to explore Caravanserai! New arenas for 2014:

Caravanserai

A unique venue Caravanserai is a convoy of English and French artists, gypsies and beatniks who have set up an encampment for weary travellers and wanderers to rest and recharge. They welcome you to have a tipple in their amazing cocktail bar and explore or lounge in their bric-a-brac camp built form old vehicles, curiosities and objects d'art they have found on the road. It’s a laidback hangout in the afternoon and positively rambunctious at night, so be sure to pay them a visit!

Travelling Barn

For the first time ever, hosted by the anarchic hillbilly barn dancing squad Cut A Shine, the travelling Barn has racks of local real ale to sup, acoustic acts in the daytime and raucous, toe-tappin' hoe-downs in the evening. The grown-ups get a pint and the whole family get to dance their boots off - all under the same oak-beamed roof! Perfect.

Project Wild Thing

From listening spots in the woods, to creative nature writing sessions, wild story-telling, an un-nature trail, creature mask making, bird spotting (and stepping), shadow drawing, groking, and a digital detox for screen addled minds, Project Wild Thing will help kids and their folks re-connect with the wild and they’ll help you take that habit back home.

And finally, for now, we’re over the moon to announce the return of an old favourite at Camp Bestival, Pig’s Big Ball Room! Dedicated to the memory of John Peel and his Pig’s Big 78 selections, it’s programmed by the Shellac Collective and Greg’s Greats and is a mind-blowingly amazing dance arena. From original R&B Dance Band, Swing, Skiffle, Jazz, African, Latin, Calypso, Rock-a-billy and Rock and Roll from live bands or played on authentic 78s, it’s high octane jitter-buggin’ action with some truly classic music! The Big Feastival 2013 {preview}

Following our successful jaunt down to Lulworth for Camp Bestival earlier this month we have wanted to see some more family festivals in action. Therefore, at the end of August, we are heading over to Alex James' farm in The Cotswolds for his annual collaboration with Jamie Oliver....The Big Feastival. Checking out the website it looks like a great family festival with the added bonus of a heavy emphasis on food!

The setting looks rather impressive with camping open from Friday 30th August to Monday 2nd September but if you're not a camper - or like us, have work commitments disrupting the weekend - then day tickets are available.

We are going to be heading over for the Saturday and will be entertained by the likes of Dodgy, Rizzle Kicks and Basement Jaxx but will miss the Sunday music from Mark Owen, KT Tunstall and The Feeling. The full line-up is here.



Food wise it looks like we are in for a real selection of treats - clearly my diet has slipped this summer and I'll be putting it on hold for this anyway! Festival goers will be invited down 'Street Food Alley' where they will find *takes a deep breath* four of Jamie Oliver's restaurants, Bhangra burgers, meatballs and more from The Bowler, Mexican Street Food from Margo and Rita, healthy stuff from Rainbo, food with an ethical conscience from Shack Food Co, Taiwanese buns from Yum Bun, Adam Henson's Pie and Ale, seafood from Café Mor, children's focus with Coco Dining, Higgidy Pies, exotic meats from Outback Burger, Paellaria and Pizza Pilgrims!
How am I going to sample all of that in one day?!



As with any decent family festival the children have not been forgotten and my two will have the Little Dudes Den to keep them busy with face painting, story telling, dancing and vintage funfair. The Workshop looks like it will appeal to me and Edith as it promises an opportunity to get seriously creative and a little bit messy and Bar Stars is somewhere for the grown ups to sample a variety of tipples - our designated driver is yet to be decided. Watch this space!

So, we have something to look forward to in order to wrap up our amazing Summer of 2013.

Camp Bestival 2013 {One week to go - plans!}

It is one week to go until we are driving down to Lulworth for Camp Bestival 2013 and the planning is go, go, go!

The list has been written, the tent has been aired, car to campsite transport checked - good old Phil & Teds and now we are planning what we want to see and do.

There is a wealth of stuff to keep the kiddies busy and these are just a few of the things on their list this year...

The countdown begins! {Camp Bestival 2013}

I have just realised it is four weeks until we will be pitching our tent in the grounds of Lulworth Castle at Camp Bestival 2013. FOUR WEEKS!

Seeing as it will be our fourth visit I am pretty sorted on the organisational side of things. TOP TIP: You need to write a list people! If you're not sure what to put on your list when planning for a family festival check out this post: Surviving a family festival.

So, our fourth visit. It goes without saying that Camp Bestival has become our main summer holiday. Some people think we're crazy not to go on an all inclusive break to somewhere hot and sit by a pool for a fortnight but that's just not us. Yes, camping and festivals can be hard work with the kiddies but every year they have come away with the most amazing memories and always want to go back.

Camp Bestival 2013: A-Z

I am sat here shivering.
Shivering?!? It is meant to be June in 7 days.
And June means Summer, yes?
And Summer for me equals camping and festivals.

As you may well know we are big fans of Camp Bestival here and have been going since 2010. One of the main reasons we keep going back is due to the amount of things going on.
